AMA Fees List - Pathology Subgroup Review Survey

The AMA is currently undertaking an internal review of pathology services within the AMA Fees List, with a focus on ensuring that item structures, explanatory notes, and supporting guidance accurately reflect contemporary clinical practice and the practical realities of Medicare claiming.

As part of this review, we are seeking input from pathologists to better understand how the current MBS rules, restrictions, and supporting resources operate in practice. Your insights will play a critical role in helping us contextualise the challenges experienced by practitioners and identify areas where improvements may be required.

This consultation will directly inform the AMA’s advocacy and engagement with the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, including any feedback or recommendations for change relating to the structure, clarity, and application of pathology services and associated rules.

We greatly value your input in this process. As specialists in the field, the experience and expertise you can provide are essential to our review process and will help ensure any proposed changes are both clinically appropriate and practically workable.

Practical Issues

The AMA understands that there are a lot of rules and regulations that apply to the claiming of pathology items and that these are not always immediately obvious to the billing pathologist. We would like to know how you inform yourself and which types of rules cause you the most difficulty with billing compliance.
